See the Result Before You Decide

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is aimed at patients who are considering changing the appearance of their teeth and would like to see the final outcome of aesthetic treatment before it even begins. Patients often have different expectations regarding the results of dental treatment. Misunderstandings are eliminated by creating a visual project of the treatment plan and understanding the end result – the new smile – during the planning stage.

What is Digital Smile Design?

The Digital Smile Design (DSD) process typically begins with taking a series of photographs of the face, teeth, facial videos, X-rays, and plaster models. A crucial step in the computerized smile design process is having a conversation with the patient. The goal is to understand the patient’s personality traits and their precise vision of an ideal smile.

Once the dentist has all the necessary information, they proceed to analyze the relationships between the teeth and the smile. They examine the shape, color, size, and alignment of the teeth. Computer software aids in establishing reference lines on the face, including the midline, horizontal line, and the lower lip line in the smile. Subsequently, they digitally design a new smile for the individual, consulting with them throughout the process using digital boards. This results in a clear, fully understandable treatment plan.

Wax Up: See the Design of Your Teeth on a Model

Based on the guidelines derived from computer-designed smiles, a “Wax Up” is created in the technical laboratory. This involves modeling the teeth in wax with a new shape. The three-dimensional visualization on a model facilitates communication between the dentist and the patient. It’s easier to show than describe the concept of the shape, length, and width of the teeth. Currently, this is an indispensable element in planning aesthetic tooth reconstruction in top dental offices.

Mock Up: See the Design of Your New Teeth Live

One of the elements of the Digital Smile Design process can be the creation of a so-called “Mock Up,” which is a fitting of the new teeth’s shape based on the prosthetic design of the work. In the dental office, based on the Wax Up, which are teeth modeled by a technician, the dentist creates a prototype of the future prosthetic work using a plastic mass. This prototype is placed on the patient’s own teeth. This allows the patient to live-test how their new smile will look and suggest any potential adjustments.
